The game was released on the Japanese arcade system (Taito Type X2) on July 14, 2010, with ports for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 released in late 2011 in Japan and English-speaking regions, published in the latter by Atlus and Rising Star Games. The console versions of the game are distinguished by the presence of more content than the original arcade; console players have received new characters, arenas, and game modes. The project was led by Kei Yamamoto, who wanted to integrate elements from previous games of the series into the fighting game and solve the problems of KOF XII. As a result, most of the reviews of the game were positive, because in this part, the developers were able to eliminate all the problems of KOF XII and also improved the system of execution of combo attacks.
In 2023, an updated version of the game was announced as Global Match for Nintendo Switch.
